As with most things worth doing, this advenutre into flying started decades ago.
Growing up, a big outing would be to pack a picnic and go to Wiggams Airport in my hometown of Norwood, Ma. Over PBnJ sandwhiches and fruit punch, we'd watch Cessnas take of and land.
While friends of mine were reading horror magazines in the local bookstore, I was thumbing through flying magazines.
I guess like all really good dreams, this one sort of stuck around. I've always thought flying was too expensive, or something other people did. Two years ago I took an intro flight at a local flight school. It was fun, but not enough to make me really want to take the plunge. This past March, I took another intro flight with a different school. Since it was a little less new, I was able to focus on the lesson more. I talked with my wife about this, started looking at the financial picture, and realized that I could make a run at this. So, I've done a ton of reading, put away about half of what I need to get my PPL, and we're giving it a go.
I'm keeping this blog for two reasons. First, for my own notes. But more importantly, there seems to be a dearth of student pilot blogs written in the DC area. There are many unique challenges to flying in this area. I hope this can help other student pilots get a feel for them.
First lesson in Aug. 30th. Can't wait.
